# What is a proxy?

> Another way for your app to reach a website.

A **proxy** is a computer that visits a website on your behalf and sends the result back to you.

The website sees the proxy’s **IP address** instead of your own. An IP address is the address a device uses on the internet.

The website can use that US address to choose what to show. Language settings and cookies can also affect the page.

## Where do I put it?

You add the proxy details to the app you want to use, such as a browser. Our [app guides](/connect-your-tool) show you where.

Opening the ProxyLane dashboard alone does not turn the proxy on in your browser.

## Does it make me anonymous?

It changes the IP address the website sees. Websites may still recognize your login, cookies or browser.
